The Wandering Mystic Singers of Bengal
Bauls reject caste, orthodoxy, and organized religion in favor of ecstatic, direct devotion — and few people outside Bengal have heard of them.
Bauls are itinerant singers whose philosophy blends Sufi, Vaishnav, and Tantric influences into something distinctly their own — a spiritual path built around direct, personal experience of the divine rather than ritual or scripture.
Traditionally, Bauls owned little and traveled constantly, singing from village to village, supported by whatever the community offered. Their songs carry philosophy disguised as simple folk melody, often deeply subversive toward caste and social hierarchy.
It's one of India's most quietly radical living traditions, and one of its least documented outside Bengal — which is exactly why WRIKSH considers it 'forgotten India,' worth actively seeking out rather than stumbling into.
