The Warkari pilgrimage to Pandharpur may be the largest annual gathering on earth with no central organizer.
Every year, millions of Warkari pilgrims walk for days or weeks to reach the temple town of Pandharpur, organized into small community groups called dindis, singing devotional songs (abhangs) the entire way.
What's remarkable isn't just the scale — it's that the entire pilgrimage runs on centuries-old community infrastructure, not a modern event-management system. Villages along the route feed and shelter pilgrims as a matter of tradition, not transaction.
Walking even a stretch of it with a guide who has done it every year of his life is a rare chance to feel how a tradition this size sustains itself without anyone running it from the top.
