Dhalo: Winter Nights in the Circle

Divar Island, Goa· 1 day· group

The experience

On Divar Island, you'll stand in Kamala's circle as the call-and-response verses begin, learning the slow swaying step that Dhalo is known for. During Shishirotsav these circles form after dark across the island's paddy-edged villages, and you'll get a daytime taste of the same rhythm.

Why this matters

Dhalo is danced through the winter month of Poush, traditionally believed to protect the community's harvest and wellbeing, and remains one of the last folk forms performed almost nightly for weeks at a stretch.

Cultural background

Performed by women in a slow-moving circle to devotional and social verses, Dhalo peaks during Shishirotsav, when villages across Goa hold nightly sessions welcoming the winter season.

Frequently asked

Is Dhalo the same as Fugdi?

They're related women's circle dances, but Dhalo is slower, more devotional, and tied specifically to the winter Shishirotsav season.

Can I visit during an actual Shishirotsav night session?

If your dates align with the winter season, Kamala can arrange an evening visit to a live village Dhalo.

What people say

There's something hypnotic about the slow circle and the singing. Beautiful evening feel, even by day.
