First vadivu demonstration.
image1 / 3A two-week immersion in the foundations of Kalaripayattu at the Athma Kalari school in Thrissur — designed for beginners with no prior martial-arts background. Each day opens with traditional body-conditioning (oil massage + footwork) and closes with a session of basic forms and short-weapons work, taught by senior practitioners of the school. The course is structured around the twelve fundamental stances (vadivu) that underpin every Kalari form, and includes an introduction to the marma-point system — the same anatomical knowledge that connects Kalari to Kerala's massage and Ayurvedic traditions. The course is residential; on-site accommodation in a simple homestay is arranged on request.
Two weeks is enough time to begin to feel the difference between watching Kalari on a stage and entering the kalari as a student. The form makes sense from the inside out — stances first, then weapons — which is exactly how senior practitioners still teach it.
Athma Kalari is one of a small number of traditional Kalari schools in central Kerala still teaching the full syllabus. The 12 vadivu (fundamental stances) form the foundation of every form; the marma system links Kalari to the regional traditions of massage and Ayurvedic treatment that developed alongside it. Daily practice is structured around the traditional oil application (uzhichil) that prepares the body for footwork.
