Where Bodu Beru (Bodu Beru Tradition) comes from

Bodu Beru is the big-drum (the bodu beru) of the Lakshadweep islanders, played at the central courtyard of the village. The bodu beru is one of the traditional instruments of the island (of the Minicoy and the northern islands) and is associated with the dance-and-celebration of the community. The form is one of the documented regional traditions of Lakshadweep and is regularly performed at the cultural programmes of the union territory.

How it's practiced

The Bodu Beru is performed by the men of the island at the central courtyard of the village or at the open ground of the festival. The men play the bodu beru (the large drum) in the central position and the dancers (men and women) perform in coordinated steps around the drum. The dance is gentle, with the small stepping rhythm of the Lakshadweep tradition. Costume is the everyday island dress — the lungi and the regional cap. Performances are at the central courtyard and at the cultural programmes of the union territory.
