Where Domni Dance comes from

Domni is a folk dance-drama of West Bengal whose roots are in the small-theatre traditions of rural Bengal. It is recognised by the Government of West Bengal's Folk & Tribal Cultural Centre as one of the state's distinctive folk forms. The dance is built around everyday domestic characters — husbands, wives, mothers, moneylenders, peasants — and uses short, recognisable scenes to comment on the lives of ordinary villagers. Documentation of the form is thin in English-language sources, and a dedicated scholarly study is still to be written.

How it's practiced

Domni is performed in a village setting, usually by a small troupe of villagers with minimal staging. Dancers alternate between short dance sequences and short acted scenes that parody and dramatise the relationships of village life. The music is provided by small hand percussion (dhol, khol) and the songs are typically drawn from the local Bengali folk repertoire. Performances are mounted at village melas, during wedding-season festivities and at the cultural programmes of panchayat and block-level folk festivals.
