Where Gambhira Dance comes from

Gambhira (also written Gombhira) is a traditional song-and-theatre form rooted in the western districts of West Bengal and the neighbouring Chapai Nawabganj region of Bangladesh. The traditional narrative frame places Shiva (the gambhir — the 'serious one') narrating the affairs of the world to Parvati, and over time the form became a vehicle for pointed social commentary on caste, corruption, debt and rural politics. It is also associated with the spring Charak/Gajan rituals that close the Bengali year.

How it's practiced

Performances centre on a single dancer-performer wearing a large wooden mask of Shiva and a flowing wig and beard, accompanied by musicians with dhol, harmonium and sometimes a small chorus. The mask is the form's signature — each village has its own traditional mask-maker and the masks themselves are kept as sacred objects between seasons. Performances are typically staged in open grounds or village squares during Chaitra Sankranti, with the singer weaving improvised satirical verses against the rhythm of the drum.
