Where Dhunuchi Dance comes from

Dhunuchi Nritya is a Bengali Hindu devotional dance performed as an offering to Goddess Durga during the annual Durga Puja, particularly in West Bengal and the wider Bengali diaspora. The dance is closely associated with the Sandhi Puja — the sacred juncture between Ashtami and Navami — when the goddess is believed to be at her most receptive. It evolved within the pandal tradition of urban and rural Bengal as a public act of devotion that is both spiritual and performative.

How it's practiced

Dancers — both men and women — hold one or more dhunuchi (clay pots filled with burning coconut husk, ghee and camphor) in their hands and sometimes in their mouths. The dance is almost entirely rhythmic rather than choreographic in the classical sense: devotees sway, spin and bend to the heavy beats of the dhak drum, accompanied by kanshor cymbals and ghanta bells. Costume is the traditional Bengali puja dress — the white-and-red-bordered garad sari for women, dhoti and kurta for men.
