Fugdi

फुगडी

A women's circle-dance performed in pairs without instruments — clapping hands and spinning, originally of Goa and Konkan, also performed in coastal Maharashtra during Nag Panchami, Mangalagaur and Hartalika.

Understand

Where Fugdi comes from

Fugdi is a women's folk dance of the Goa and Konkan regions, with documented Maharashtra variants among the Konkani-speaking communities of the Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri coasts and the broader Marathi-speaking belt. The Goa form is traditionally performed on the sacred ground (maan) during the Dhalo festival — an all-women festival — and in front of the deity Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi. In Maharashtra the dance is performed in pairs of women facing each other, holding hands and spinning, at festivals such as Nag Panchami, Mangalagaur and Hartalika. Several regional variants exist across Maharashtra — Dandafugdi, Eka-hatachi fugdi (single-handed), Bas fugdi, Zimma, Jaate, Nakhulyo and Bhui-fugdi.

How it's practiced

Fugdi is performed by women standing face-to-face, holding hands, and spinning in a circular motion, with the rhythm provided by hand-clapping and song. The typical performance does not involve any musical instrument — the clapping IS the music. In the Goa form, songs are predominantly composed by women themselves, frequently about the challenges and struggles of domestic life, with occasional hymns to Radha and Krishna. In the Kunbi and Gavda communities, men also join the dance and the ghumat, mhadle and kansalem instruments are introduced. Costume is the tightly-draped nine-yard navvari sari in the kanshata style, with flower garlands (venis) in the hair and heavy gold ornaments.
