Where Geetru (Geetru Folk Dance) comes from

Geetru (also called Geet-Ru or Getru) is the central festival-dance of the Dogra and Gujjar communities of the Jammu region, performed at the Geetru festival (the central agricultural celebration of the community) in the spring. The dance is one of the documented regional traditions of the Jammu region and forms part of the broader Jammu folk-dance repertoire. The form is regularly performed at the cultural programmes of the state and at the regional community festivals.

How it's practiced

Geetru is performed by men and women of the Dogra and Gujjar community in a circle at the central courtyard of the village or at the open ground of the festival. The men and women perform in coordinated steps to the song of the Geetru cycle and to the rhythm of the dhol and the small regional instruments. The dance is gentle, with the small stepping rhythm of the Jammu tradition. Costume is the everyday Jammu dress — the dhoti-kurta and the regional cap. Performances are at the Geetru festival and at the cultural programmes of the state.
