Craft & Tradition · Goa
A red-and-white line technique used to decorate temple and church walls alike, unique to Goa's coastal belt.
Understand
Kaavi art gets its name from kaav, the red laterite-oxide pigment used to draw on a white lime-plastered surface — a technique found on both Hindu temple walls and Goan Catholic churches, one of the few crafts to visually hold both traditions in a single frame.
An artist etches a design directly into wet lime plaster, then fills it with the red pigment before the surface fully dries, producing a durable, weather-resistant mural.
