Performing Art · Goa
A winter-nights circle dance sung and performed by Goan women, invoking the goddess for the community's wellbeing.
Understand
Dhalo is sung and danced by Goan women through the winter nights of Paush and Magh (roughly December to February), historically as a form of prayer for the community's wellbeing and a good harvest.
Women gather in a circle each night for several consecutive nights, singing devotional and everyday-life verses while moving in slow, synchronised steps, usually in an open courtyard or temple ground.
