Rogan art

Painting on cloth with a thick, brightly coloured paste made from castor oil, kept alive in Nirona village, Kutch.

Understand

Where Rogan art comes from

Rogan painting is practised today by a single family lineage in Nirona, Kutch, which has kept the craft alive.

How it's practiced

Castor oil is boiled into a thick paste and mixed with pigment; the artist draws it out into a fine thread with a metal stylus and lays it on cloth, often folding the cloth to print a mirror image.
