Devotional panel painting known for raised gesso work, inlaid stones and gold-foil highlights.
Understand
Thanjavur painting flourished under royal patronage in Thanjavur and remains closely associated with the town; it carries a geographical-indication tag.
Artists sketch the deity on cloth pasted to wood, build raised relief with a chalk-and-glue paste, set in glass stones and gold foil, then paint the remaining surface in bright colours.
