Where Dalkhai comes from

Dalkhai is a women's folk dance of western Odisha, particularly associated with the Bhuyan, Binjhal, Kisan and other Adivasi communities of the districts of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir and Jharsuguda. The dance is most popularly performed at the Nuakhai festival (the new-rice harvest festival observed throughout Odisha) and at weddings and the Pola cattle festival. It is one of the most widely performed women's social dances of western Odisha, with the Bolangir and Bargarh regions cited as the dance's heartland. Dalkhai has been documented in Indian folk-arts surveys and is recognised as a distinctive western-Odisha tribal women's form.

How it's practiced

Dalkhai is performed by groups of women in a circle (sometimes in two facing rows or in a grid), moving in coordinated steps with hands on the waist or hips. The dance is accompanied by the sung Dalkhai song (the lead singer begins the line and the ensemble responds) and by the dhol and dholak drum accompaniment. The movements mix tribal Adivasi patterns with classical Odia elements — small steps, hands on hips, the characteristic right-foot kicking of the dance and gentle shoulder rotations. The dance is performed at weddings, at the Nuakhai festival, at the Pola and at community gatherings. Costume is the colourful ghagra-choli of the western Odisha tribal communities, with the silver jewellery of the Adivasi dress.
