Ghumat making

Practised in Goa

One of Goa's living craft traditions.

Where it comes from

The ghumat is Goa's own drum — a clay pot open at both ends — and has kept time for Shigmo songs, temple music and Chovoth aartis for generations.

How it's practiced

A potter throws the pot with a wide mouth and a narrow neck; the wide end is covered with stretched skin, while the player cups and opens the narrow end with one hand to bend the tone.
