ग्रीड़ा नृत्य
A three-part harvest dance of central Madhya Pradesh — performed during the Rabi crop harvest by villagers from different communities converging to dance together.
Understand
Grida dance is a folk dance of Madhya Pradesh celebrated during the harvest of the Rabi (winter-spring) crop. The dance prioritises community participation — people from different villages converge to celebrate and perform the dance together, making it a marker of regional solidarity at the close of the agricultural year. The form is one of the lesser-documented but widely practised harvest dances of the central Indian plains, and is recognised by the state cultural affairs department as a distinctive folk tradition.
Grida dance has three named parts performed in sequence. It opens with Sela — defined by steady and slow footwork that establishes the rhythmic base of the dance. In the second part, Selalarki, the footwork becomes faster and more energetic as the dancers build momentum. In the final part, Selabhadoni, the dancers stop their footwork and sway their body, marking the celebratory resolution of the dance. The dance is performed in open village squares or in fields at the close of the harvest, accompanied by the dhol and other percussion instruments of the region.
