Understand
Where Hudo comes from
Hudo is one of the named folk song-and-dance traditions of Gujarat, listed by Wikipedia's Indian folk music article alongside Garba, Doha, Sanedo, Chhand, Sugam Sangeet, Dayro, Fattanna, Bhavai, Maniyaro and Tippani. Like several other Gujarat folk forms, it is a community song-and-dance tradition rather than a choreographed stage form. Detailed scholarly documentation in English is thin, and the form is preserved chiefly through community practice in the villages of Gujarat.
How it's practiced
Hudo is performed in community settings, typically by groups of villagers singing together in call-and-response to the rhythm of hand-clapping and small percussion. The dance is celebratory rather than choreographed, with participants forming loose circles or lines and moving to the song's tempo. Costume is everyday village dress rather than stage costume. Performances accompany festivals, weddings and seasonal gatherings, particularly in the rural and tribal belts of Gujarat.
