Mahakali/Aghori Kunitha belongs to the same family of fierce-deity worship dances as Veeragase and Somana Kunitha, where performers embody a deity's terrifying aspect rather than a gentle one — here, the goddess Mahakali and the death-transcending imagery associated with Aghori ascetic practice. Like its relatives, it is danced at temple festivals as an act of devotion, not theatre for its own sake.
Performers apply dramatic makeup and dark, ash-toned body paint to take on Mahakali's fierce form, then dance to an intense, trance-building drum rhythm, working toward a climactic pitch at which the deity is considered to have been fully invoked.
