Mizo Parluk (Parluk dance)

Understand

Where Mizo Parluk (Parluk dance) comes from

Mizo Parluk is the Mizo's traditional social-dance of the young men and women, performed at the village festival and at the wedding of the Mizo community. The dance is one of the lesser-documented but living traditions of the Mizo and forms part of the broader Mizo social-dance repertoire. The Parluk is performed by young men and women of the Mizo community in a small circle (or in two facing rows) at the central courtyard of the village. The form is regularly performed at the cultural programmes of the state and at the regional Mizo celebrations.

How it's practiced

Mizo Parluk is performed by young men and women of the Mizo community in a small circle (or in two facing rows) at the central courtyard of the village. The men and women perform in coordinated steps to the song of the Parluk cycle and to the rhythm of the khuang (drum) and the small cymbals. The dance is gentle, with the small stepping rhythm of the Mizo tradition. Costume is the everyday Mizo dress — the puandum and the small regional head-cloth. Performances are at the courtyard and at the cultural programmes of the state.
