பறை ஆட்டம்
The Tamil drum-dance tradition — performed with the Parai frame drum in groups at festivals, weddings and processions, considered one of the most ancient Tamil folk arts.
Understand
Where Parai Attam comes from
Parai Attam is the dance form associated with the parai — the traditional frame drum of the Tamil people whose name derives from the Tamil root meaning 'to speak' or 'to tell'. The drum is mentioned in the Sangam literature (including the Kuṟuntokai) and in the Tirumurai hymnals of the 6th-11th centuries CE, indicating its ancient status as both an instrument of music and of public announcement. The dance associated with the parai was traditionally linked to the Paraiyar community — historically drum-beating was associated with the untouchable castes, and the form's revival is part of a broader Tamil cultural reclamation. Parai Attam is now performed at Tamil weddings, festivals and processions, often by large mixed-caste groups reclaiming the form.
How it's practiced
Parai Attam is performed by groups of dancers standing or sitting in a long line, each holding a parai drum and beating it with two wooden sticks in synchronised patterns. The dance features complex rhythmic sequences that build across the performance, with the dancers sometimes adding vocalisations. The accompanying music is the parai itself, with tharai and other instruments occasionally joining. The dance is performed in open settings — at temple festivals, weddings, political and cultural processions, and on community occasions. Costume is simple — often just the dhoti and a shirt — to allow free movement of the arms and torso for drumming.
