Tagin Folk Dance
The Tagin community-dance of the Upper Subansiri district — performed at the central festivals of the Tagin with the men-and-women's dance and the regional songs of the Tagin tradition.
Understand
The Tagin folk dance is the community-festival-dance of the Tagin tribe of the Upper Subansiri district of eastern Arunachal Pradesh. The Tagin are one of the major tribes of the state and have a vibrant cultural tradition of dance, song and the community festival. The form is one of the documented regional traditions of Arunachal Pradesh and is regularly performed at the cultural programmes of the state and at the regional Tagin community festivals.
The Tagin folk dance is performed by men and women of the Tagin community in a circle at the central courtyard of the village or at the open ground of the festival. The men and women perform in coordinated steps to the song of the Tagin cycle and to the rhythm of the dhol and the small regional instruments. The dance is gentle, with the small stepping rhythm of the Tagin tradition. Costume is the traditional Tagin dress — the colourful wrap and the small regional headdress. Performances are at the village festival and at the cultural programmes of the state.
