What you'll do

In Goa, Diwali begins the night before — with Narkasur. Every neighbourhood builds a giant demon king from bamboo, paper and paint, parades him through the streets after dark and burns him before sunrise, as Krishna's victory over evil is retold.

This evening trail starts at the Vitthal Temple in Comba, one of Margao's oldest quarters. You meet the people who build the effigies, see how the frames, masks and costumes come together, and lend a hand with the final decorating. It's the side of Goan Diwali most visitors never see — loud, joyful and deeply local.
