Understand
Dhol is the drum-dance of the Warli and Dubla tribal communities of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (the small western-Indian union territory that combines the former Portuguese enclaves of Daman and Diu with the larger Dadra and Nagar Haveli). The dance is performed at the central village festival and the cultural programmes of the union territory. The form is one of the documented regional traditions of the western Indian tribal belt and is regularly performed at the cultural programmes of DNH.
Dhol is performed by men of the Warli and Dubla community at the central courtyard of the village or at the open ground of the festival. The men dance in coordinated steps to the song of the Dhol cycle and to the rhythm of the dhol and the small regional instruments. The dance is energetic, with the men's lunges and the small steps of the DNH tradition. Costume is the everyday Warli-Dubla dress — the dhoti and the regional shawl. Performances are at the courtyard and at the cultural programmes of the union territory.
