Understand
Khanjan is the wedding-dance of the Portuguese-Indian Catholic community of Daman (the small former Portuguese enclave that has a centuries-old Catholic tradition), performed at the marriage of the community. The dance is associated with the wedding cycle and the cultural life of the Catholic community. The form is one of the lesser-documented but living traditions of DNH and is regularly performed at the cultural programmes of the union territory and at the regional Catholic community festivals.
Khanjan is performed by women of the Catholic community of Daman at the wedding of the family, with the women singing the wedding-cycle songs and dancing the small hand-claps of the tradition. The dance is gentle, with the small stepping rhythm of the Catholic tradition. Music is the small regional instruments (the brass shehnai and the dholak). Costume is the everyday Daman Catholic dress — the sari for the women and the dhoti-kurta for the men. Performances are at the wedding and at the cultural programmes of the union territory.
